A one-man creative machine, John Pedder, some say the Ernest Hemmingway of Woodblock Printing.
Comparing John Pedder to Hemmingway centres on his obsession with structure, omission, and modernist precision. The simile works because of how both creators build complex emotional attachment to seemingly simple “unadorned” building blocks.
Both using declarative sentences to build the architecture of a character/piece. Like Hemmingway’s iceberg Theory Pedder also argues his strength comes from what is left out. The rest is just ink…!
Please join us for another stunning exhibition as Pedder fills the gallery with his signature Woodblock print Characters alongside his superb book Small Mercies and a Gentle Giant, 2.2mtrs in height from which Pedder will demonstrate and produce a giant woodblock print Live in the gallery.
Talking of ink the artist will be offering time and parting his knowledge with a Live Wood block print in the Gallery on Saturday 11th from midday. Come along and see how it all happens, the print measures around 2.2 metres ‘Gentle Giant’ the artist’s largest to date.
“The idea to me of the ‘gentle giant’ is somebody who wields power but not only do they not abuse it, they use it to help others. It can simply mean a large imposing figure, but it can also mean possessing great influence, articulation or wealth. Strong people should always be judged on how they use their power to protect the vulnerable.”
