DESCRIPTION:‘APPUNTI INUTILI’By Matteo Giuntini \n\n\n\nOpens  9th June Friday  7pm -9.30pm       Exhibition runs until 2nd July 2023 \n\n\n\nOpening Night Drinks Reception Friday 9th June @ 7PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick words\, rapid phrases\, & spontaneous ideas put down on paper that are reworked onto canvas at a later stage. \n\n\n\n‘APPUNTI INUTILI translation ‘SILLY NOTES’ is a series of mixed techniques on paper\, quick paintings with a punk sensation\, images suggested by sounds and words\, some sort of a chain reaction in which one stroke leads to another giving birth to fantastical and surreal stories. \n\n\n\nA collection of images from the heart\, shot straight like an electric impulse from brush to paper. Once again we are blessed by the excellence of the Artists that grace our walls and it is with a bursting heart of pride to re introduce everyone to one of The most un restricted of artists that we have had the pleasure to work with over the last thirteen years. \n\n\n\nLadies & gentlemen please welcome Matteo Giuntini who is bringing his very own recognizable artistic language all the way from Pisa Italy. \n\n\n\nMatteo Giuntini (Livorno 1977). Since 2005\, he has dedicated himself to researching his language through different mediums\, painting\, drawing\, and installation. “I am nature\,” says the artist\, and over the years his work has focused on the visceral relationship between the human being\, nature\, and the animal world\, an interweaving that often results in bizarre anthropomorphic creatures bordering on the grotesque. His painting deteriorates and envelops a wide variety of media. Using any kind of medium he gives life to various projects not least the series “Appunti Inutili”\, \n\n\n\nFirst presented in 2022 in Turin as part of Graphic Days\, punk-inspired artist’s books\, and unique hand-bound pieces. In 2019 he took part in the residency program at the Macro Museum in Rome and in January 2023 in Indonesia with the project Joglo Bianco. Giuntini counts numerous group and solo exhibitions both in Italy and around the globe. He has to his credit\, a wide number of collaborations in the world of communication\, design\, and fashion houses such as the Valentino brand with which in  he realized a Capsule Collection presented in London at Chelsea in Bloom. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on the opening night or throughout the show. DESCRIPTION:‘SKIN IN THE GAME’KIM TONG \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Night Drinks Reception Friday 11th November from 7pm \n\n\n\nBen Oakley Gallery are proud to present Kim Tong \n\n\n\n‘Skin in The Game’  \n\n\n\nKim has been painting for many a year and then some. \n\n\n\nShe initially exhibited amidst the emerging field of identity politics in the 80s and 90s. This work was favourably reviewed (notably by Spare Rib Magazine) which led to her inclusion in the late 90s in both a North West Arts Council UK touring exhibition ‘Lines of Desire’ exhibiting alongside Paula Rego and the International touring Drawing Exhibition ‘Reclaiming The Madonna’. \n\n\n\nKim’s new series of oil paintings were completed over the last 3 years and continue a dialogue on the eternal themes of desire\, beauty\, the Sublime and it’s representation.  \n\n\n\n“Lost in the Wilds of Painting\, the drip\, the splash\, the slide and the slip of the paint. Imagery culled from media that was and media that wasn’t. False memories\, true traces\, things half remembered and things half forgotten. Revealing and concealing layers of pigment\, erased lines – talking loud\, saying nothin’. Whispering something. \n\n\n\nAt the beginning of each painting I bet the farm. Chasing the dragon. Painting? That’s how it goes ……Bringing up Bambi. Painting ? We knew there was something special about the artworks when all 8 sold within an hour of the show opening\, so quickly that we were able to commission SWELER to paint another 6 which arrived all the way from Melbourne during the show and all sold out before it ended!!   \n\n\n\nThis trend continued with his first Solo Exhibition in London held at Ben Oakley Gallery which sold out in ten minutes\, yes ten minutes!!! a frantic scramble of bodies and red dots flying across the gallery\, I think we were at the pub by 8pm. It became apparent while I was painting them that they were capturing moments in time\, the sun being the most consistent motif throughout.  Taking myself off into the wilds of the countryside felt like an adventure – especially for a tired\, weak old git. Like a geriatric Vasco de Gama in a Toyota Corolla. If I wasn’t able to step outside\, it was time to explore inner space. DESCRIPTION:Preview Drinks Reception 9th July @ 7pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibition runs until 24th July 2021. \n\n\n\nAs we ease one genius along\, a space becomes available for another. From graphic bold Prints by John Pedder to Abstract Oil Portraiture from our list of Gallery Favourites Robert Sample takes over Ben Oakley Gallery on Friday 7th July from 7pm the artist will be in attendance. We just love the depth of Samples world and invite you to check out this brand new show on paper and board. \n\n\n\nRobert Sample’s paintings explore a world that has strong visual references to earlier masters and styles\, yet is very rooted in the present\, combining dynamic elements from abstract painting and contrasting traditional techniques customary with historic painting.  \n\n\n\nThe protagonists in Robert’s paintings avert their gaze from the viewer\, they seem forlorn and overwhelmed by the existential world\, some look skyward in search of redemption and clarity. You could be forgiven for thinking this work deals with particular groups of individuals\, but no\, these are pictures of everyone of us stripped back to reveal our common vulnerabilities. Sample describes the images as depicting the “weightless mire” that we all endure as a key part of the human condition. They reflect back at us the times when we all feel rootless\, unanchored and dissociated. \n\n\n\nSample manipulates paint combining the impression of three dimentional form with large\, gestural brushwork that tips its hat toward abstract expressionism. Paint is added and removed\, layered and edited\, these abstract backdrops are proud not to represent anything but itself\, an exploration of mark making. \n\n\n\nWe are looking forward to seeing everyone back in the Ben Oakley Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Please allow us to proudly introduce to you the very brilliant John Pedder with this his 1st London Solo Show. \n\n\n\nBIG IMPRESSIONS of SMALL MERCIES \n\n\n\nLets all get together and give him a BIG B.O.G welcome on June 4th from 7pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibition runs until 20th June 2021. \n\n\n\nOn offer will be a crisp new selection of larger than seen before Wood block Prints along with some classic old favourites. John will be in attendance on the night and ready with pen in hand to sign his wonderful book ‘Small Mercies’. \n\n\n\n John Pedder:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Why printmaking I hear you cry. Well\, it’s woodcut printmaking to be specific. I’ve been a bit stupid about this for decades; my lifelong commitment to a primitive mark was going OK but I needed something else. I’ve been a builder and maker all my life with a love of woodworking\, so looking back at putting my drawing and carpentry together just seems ridiculous to have missed it for so long. But what’s done is done and the main thing is that the epiphany occurred about five years ago.  I like to think that it was a bit like Rothko thinking ‘you know what\, I’m just going to do massive ethereal swathes of iridescent colour from now on\, see how that pans out’. Or Pollock making a promise with himself to only drip paint for the rest of the day just to see where brushless painting would take him.  Woodcut printmaking slows me down and allows me to put great industry into the simplest mark. It also offers the magic of happenstance and unpredictability which allows no end of inspiration and frustration\, but mainly inspiration.  I’ve never told anybody this before but I made a decision to fully embrace two dimensions so my work is right on the surface of the paper with no suggestion of the existence of depth. I make no apologies for being the polar opposite of the ‘Star Wars’ special effects team but I don’t believe that my design ability is any less sophisticated; I create restriction to search for creativity\, you should try it\, restriction is actually very liberating.  My name is John Pedder and I think of bullshit like this literally all the time!” \n\n\n\nHope to see you all soon \n\n\n\nThanks for your continued support \n\n\n\nBen

DESCRIPTION:Ben Oakley Gallery launches a joint exhibition from Jo Peel & Mark McClure \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us in the Gallery with a drinks reception on Friday 11th September from 7pm. Exhibition continues until 4th October. \n\n\n\nFor those of you who can’t make it to the Gallery please enjoy our Virtual Gallery online…. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHaving worked with Artist Jo Peel over the last ten years we are excited to welcome her back into the Ben Oakley Gallery her works are sophisticated and have an uplifting edgy feel they have evolved over the years but haven’t lost any of Peels atmospherics and detailed observations of our urban surroundings. She has travelled extensively continually painting huge walls around the globe\, was the first Street Artist to paint a wall at the Royal Chelsea Flower Show and continued to produce exquisite screen prints and original paintings on canvas\, one of which now resides in the Sheffield Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMark McClure is new to the gallery so we’d love you to give him a hearty BOG welcome. Marks’ geometric striking works grace public city walls to gallery walls internationally and across the UK. \n\n\n\nHis larger exterior works take on an abstract architectural feel and mirror their surroundings as he uses his distinctive palette with dynamic shapes. \n\n\n\nMcClure’s’ interior pieces are also bold and structural\, they include multi layered screen prints\, original one off pieces working with wood\, paint and a variety of mediums all with a strong graphic visual appeal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHaving both worked together on Living Walls with the mighty Moniker Projects in 2014 a plan was hatched to produce a series of unique collaborations together and individual works for a two person show. Though down to each other’s busy commitments the show has had to wait until now. We hope you all make time to see the show here at Ben Oakley Gallery Greenwich London SE10. He soon appreciated the craftsmanship and variety of the stall holder’s wares that surrounded him from jewels to junk. \n\n\n\n“It might be a silver pocket watch case that catches my interest for its pure design aesthetic which in turn inspires me to start thinking\, how can I use this as a base for a piece of artwork? SUMMARY:TYLER KENNEDY STENT
DESCRIPTION:International Solo Exhibition – The Inner Child\n\n\n\nNew Zealand’s Tyler Kennedy Stent on his upcoming exhibition: \n\n\n\nAll of the preparation work\, drafts and smaller canvas works were done in the camp of Conscious Impact\, in Sindhupalchuck\, Nepal. I’ve carried these two little watercolour moleskin notebooks with me for most of the time that I’ve been away from New Zealand and am still constantly jotting down ideas and sketches. The majority of the paintings in ‘The Inner Child’ were drafted in the notebooks first. This allowed the work I was doing with Conscious Impact to have a direct influence on the paintings. \n\n\n\nAs for explanations of the paintings and their titles\, I am hesitant to say too much. I paint because of the loss I have with words when it comes to trying to explain certain ideas and emotions. Particularly the concept of the Inner Child I find very abstract – it is based on the work of Carl Jung. I’ve always been fascinated with his more predominant ideas surrounding the Persona and the Shadow (Archetypes of his\, based on how we intend to be perceived and by what we repress) but the smaller details\, like the Inner Child\, never seemed to me to be as significant up until now.  \n\n\n\nIn Nepal\, due to a series of emotional events\, I was made aware of my Inner Child. After I left\, during a ceremony I was attending in the mountains of Catalonia\, I came to realise how important this was and even that this could be attributed to why I paint children. Infants and young children have particular transparency when it comes to emotions. As an artist who intends to portray the emotion rather than the subject itself\, this allows me to translate ideas with more ease to my audience.

SUMMARY:ROBERT SAMPLE
DESCRIPTION:Solo Exhibition. \n\n\nRobert Sample has exhibited extensively in London as well as the continent. Robert’s paintings explore a world that has strong visual references to earlier masters and styles\, yet is very rooted in the present\, combining dynamic elements of street art with contrasting traditional techniques. Working on sheets of industrial ply he uses a mixture of oil paint\, gesso and stencils along with spray paint and other household products. Robert paints flesh\, fat\, skin\, bone and muscle. In the application of paint he is less concerned with realism and more with effect. \n\n\n\nIn all his work Sample explore humanity in its extremes; he focuses our attention on that which is often overlooked. In his work Robert encourages the viewer to create their own narrative\, he allows the work to be viewed subjectively touching on day to day human emotion and experiences\, urging the viewer to look deeper into the absurdities and beauty of human nature.
