SUMMARY:EVERYTHING
DESCRIPTION:‘Everything’ \n\n\n\nOpens 8th September – Exhibition runs until 1st October \n\n\n\nOpening Night Drinks Reception Friday 8th September @ 7PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘Everything’ shows a selection of drawings from the past two years\, from a continuing series or diary-cataloguing museum visits. I say museum\, but is also Galleries\, libraries\, bookshops\, and record shops – museum gives me the self-illusion of something academic and learned. It’s an excuse to head back in to the city and experience a bit of city life and is a great counterpoint to sitting in fields and painting nature. It’s a gateway to coffee shops too. The drawings are almost notations of the day. There would definitely be a story or reason for them though they seem to get lost to time and reason and become purely visual markers\, existing in their own right. We’ve been privileged to work with David Bray for the last decade & some. His imagination and many mediums style & genre’s never cease to amaze us. From fine art illustration\, Acrylic Paintings depicting Mythological Neolithic\, Pop\, Abstract Landscape to his very own satirical and observational cartoons. A genuine powerhouse in the art department on that we can all agree. ‘EVERYTHING’ David’s Solo exhibition is a first with it all going on & in. Opening Friday 8th September 7pm at Ben Oakley Gallery Greenwich\, the title alludes to what he’s prepared for us all. IN ADDITTION: We have Stergin a multi instrumentalist performing in the basement.  \n\n\n\n“This is music that you just couldn’t have heard five years ago. It’s completely in the now\, in the moment trying to push the boundaries of what’s possible and what can be done.“ \n\n\n\n(Tom Robinson\, BBC6 Music) \n\n\n\nIn this one off live performance Stergin will perform with his bass clarinet\, sound effects & an ambient score inspired by David Bray’s illustrations.Always fresh\, always free\, always something great to see\, join us on the Opening night\, the artist will be in attendance. \n\n\n\nMany thanks Ben & Helen Oakley \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDirections to Ben Oakley Gallery: \n\n\n\nNelson Arcade SE10 9JB runs between Greenwich Market \n\n\n\n2 mins from Greenwich Cutty Sark DLR \n\n\n\nand Nelson Road. \n\n\n\n5 minute walk from Greenwich Overground (10 mins from London Bridge)

SUMMARY:APPUNTI INUTILI
DESCRIPTION:‘APPUNTI INUTILI’By Matteo Giuntini \n\n\n\nOpens  9th June Friday  7pm -9.30pm Exhibition runs until 2nd July 2023 \n\n\n\nOpening Night Drinks Reception Friday 9th June @ 7PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick words\, rapid phrases\, & spontaneous ideas put down on paper that are reworked onto canvas at a later stage. \n\n\n\n‘APPUNTI INUTILI translation ‘SILLY NOTES’ is a series of mixed techniques on paper\, quick paintings with a punk sensation\, images suggested by sounds and words\, some sort of a chain reaction in which one stroke leads to another giving birth to fantastical and surreal stories. \n\n\n\nA collection of images from the heart\, shot straight like an electric impulse from brush to paper. Once again we are blessed by the excellence of the Artists that grace our walls and it is with a bursting heart of pride to re introduce everyone to one of The most un restricted of artists that we have had the pleasure to work with over the last thirteen years. \n\n\n\nLadies & gentlemen please welcome Matteo Giuntini who is bringing his very own recognizable artistic language all the way from Pisa Italy. \n\n\n\nMatteo Giuntini (Livorno 1977). Since 2005\, he has dedicated himself to researching his language through different mediums\, painting\, drawing\, and installation. “I am nature\,” says the artist\, and over the years his work has focused on the visceral relationship between the human being\, nature\, and the animal world\, an interweaving that often results in bizarre anthropomorphic creatures bordering on the grotesque. His painting deteriorates and envelops a wide variety of media. Using any kind of medium he gives life to various projects not least the series “Appunti Inutili”\, \n\n\n\nFirst presented in 2022 in Turin as part of Graphic Days\, punk-inspired artist’s books\, and unique hand-bound pieces. In 2019 he took part in the residency program at the Macro Museum in Rome and in January 2023 in Indonesia with the project Joglo Bianco. Giuntini counts numerous group and solo exhibitions both in Italy and around the globe. He has to his credit\, a wide number of collaborations in the world of communication\, design\, and fashion houses such as the Valentino brand with which in  he realized a Capsule Collection presented in London at Chelsea in Bloom. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on the opening night or throughout the show. Please get in touch for a buyers PDF. \n\n\n\nMany thanks for your continued support. \n\n\n\nBen & Helen Oakley    \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDirections to Ben Oakley Gallery: \n\n\n\nNelson Arcade SE10 9JB runs between Greenwich Market \n\n\n\n2 mins from Greenwich Cutty Sark DLR \n\n\n\nand Nelson Road. \n\n\n\n5 minute walk from Greenwich Overground (10 mins from London Bridge)

SUMMARY:the-ebbing-curve-of-forgetfulness
DESCRIPTION:The Ebbing Curve of Forgetfulness \n\n\n\nDuncan McAfee \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Night Drinks Reception Friday 21st April @ 7PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen Oakley Gallery is proud to present ‘The Ebbing Curve of Forgetfulness’. The first solo exhibition to take place in our new building will include more than 30 recent paintings and drawings by South London based artist Duncan McAfee. \n\n\n\nSpanning the last seven years of McAfee’s practice the works in this exhibition all share a consistent mix-and-match attitude to image making\, splicing together misremembered elements to create his hybrid images. The title for the exhibition comes out of a conversation about the work in relation to Russell Hoban’s 1980 novel Riddley Walker and the creative act of memory to fill in the gaps of what’s forgotten. Trying to remember Hermann Ebbinghaus’ ‘forgetting curve’\, a late 19thC mathematical formula that depicts how the rate of human memory decays over time\, our title ‘The Ebbing Curve of Forgetfulness’ is itself a misquotation\, a faulty memory\, borrowed and misplaced in perfect parallel with the works on display.‘Drunks’ and ‘Portraits of Drunks’ (2017) here are literally steeped in wine\, the paper covered in evocative pools of dried red residue. To paint in wine plays with ideas around transubstantiation and religious icons; are these drunks or saints? The wine forms shapes like the ink-blots developed by psychologist Hermann Rorschach in the 1920s. These have been responded to with painting and drawing\, teasing out some figurative or narrative strain highlighting or obscuring certain elements. There’s a fun interplay between the marks made by intention and the materials doing their own thing\, a sort of collaboration between artist and material. The process is like a game of consequences\, a surrealist Exquisite Corpse\, or maybe some form of competition. \n\n\n\nOf course this is a fantasy\, the ink\, the paint\, the wine are all dead matter. But McAfee plays with this fantasy\, it’s somehow necessary to reach a new painting\, not a facsimile or an interpretation but an unplanned image arisen from the process of its own making. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the more recent works (‘Exploding Heads’ 2019-2021\, ’Kerfuffle’ 2022) red wine substitute (fake wine for fake religious paintings!) is spattered across the painted surfaces suggesting transubstantiation\, intoxication and cartoon violence. Reflecting the uncertainties of our times\, the population of cartoonish characters the artist depicts seem anxious and manic from overexposure\, all wide eyes and gritted teeth. There are references following the lineage of Picasso to Bacon\, through Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism to Condo and his ‘Psychological Cubism’. McAfee draws from and collages together his personal\, art history and popular culture creating works full of contradictions: They’re irreverant and sincere\, humorous and grotesque\, accidental and intentional\, timid and boisterous\, anxious yet joyous and celebratory. \n\n\n\nDuncan McAfee (b. 1976) graduated from Chelsea School of Art in 2000 and has been on the Turps Banana Off-Site Programme since 2021. \n\n\n\nDirections to Ben Oakley Gallery: \n\n\n\nNelson Arcade SE10 9JB runs between Greenwich Market \n\n\n\n2 mins from Greenwich Cutty Sark DLR \n\n\n\nand Nelson Road. \n\n\n\n5 minute walk from Greenwich Overground (10 mins from London Bridge)

SUMMARY:SKIN IN THE GAME
DESCRIPTION:‘SKIN IN THE GAME’KIM TONG \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Night Drinks Reception Friday 11th November from 7pm \n\n\n\nBen Oakley Gallery are proud to present Kim Tong \n\n\n\n‘Skin in The Game’  \n\n\n\nKim has been painting for many a year and then some. \n\n\n\nShe initially exhibited amidst the emerging field of identity politics in the 80s and 90s. This work was favourably reviewed (notably by Spare Rib Magazine) which led to her inclusion in the late 90s in both a North West Arts Council UK touring exhibition ‘Lines of Desire’ exhibiting alongside Paula Rego and the International touring Drawing Exhibition ‘Reclaiming The Madonna’. \n\n\n\nKim’s new series of oil paintings were completed over the last 3 years and continue a dialogue on the eternal themes of desire\, beauty\, the Sublime and it’s representation.  \n\n\n\n“Lost in the Wilds of Painting\, the drip\, the splash\, the slide and the slip of the paint. Imagery culled from media that was and media that wasn’t. False memories\, true traces\, things half remembered and things half forgotten. Revealing and concealing layers of pigment\, erased lines – talking loud\, saying nothin’. Whispering something. \n\n\n\nAt the beginning of each painting I bet the farm. Chasing the dragon. Painting? That’s how it goes ……Bringing up Bambi. Painting ? I’ve skin in the game “ \n\n\n\nWe would like to invite you all to the opening drinks reception on Fri 11th November 2022 7pm -10pm Especially as this is our last solo here at the legendary No9 Tunpin Lane SE10. \n\n\n\nDo get in touch if you would like a full buyers pdf of the new works. \n\n\n\nMany thanks Ben

SUMMARY:THE RETURN OF LONDON'S No1 RAY RICHARDSON
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night Drinks Reception Friday 3rd December @ 7pm \n\n\n\n‘The Return Of London’s No1’ \n\n\n\nRay Richardson ( British born1964) \n\n\n\nDuring lockdown 2020 Richardson with his Return of the Southpaw training regime\, maintained keeping his eye and hand coordination painting away in his apartment dubbed ‘The Indoor League Studio’ just to try to keep a level of sanity and purpose whilst unable to visit his usual studio by the Thames. \n\n\n\nWith his trusted dog and best pal Wee Bri by his side\, the one man and his dog dynamic duo were at home alone for 12 weeks. \n\n\n\nIn that time he generously utilised ‘The Artists Pledge’\, produced a selection of cracking works for the NHS and variety of charities as well as a raft of handsome oil paintings on board that are full of tales filled with instant richness.  \n\n\n\nPainted with optimism “holding the board in one hand and swivelling them round bought a spontaneity to the work bringing us a bit of hope coming up & out into the light”. The Title of the show links on from his sell out show at the Ben Oakley Gallery ten years ago in 2012 and we welcome the artist back for round two. \n\n\n\nThese affordable unseen little gems will be on show at The Ben Oakley Gallery Opening Fri 3rd December from 7pm and will run until 19th Dec 2021 We look forward to seeing you all as we wrap up our year long schedule of excellent artist shows. And finally we would like to thank everyone who has supported us in any way over this last tough year\, we hope you all keep well and have a safe and happy Christmas.

SUMMARY:'YOU IZ A MACHINE' JOHN McCARTHY
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night Drinks Reception Friday 12th November @ 7pm \n\n\n\n“I’ve always collected vintage images. Old comics\, magazines\, posters and books\, not in a ‘stick ’em in a big bag in the loft’ kind of way\, but stored in large white boxes and placed in large white cupboards. Stanley Kubrick did the same thing (though his was a warehouse). They’re not precious\, though. I didn’t mind if they get damaged or creased up. In fact they sometimes look better if they are damaged. This lead to an idea of making paper collages of the ripped and torn images. I did quite a few small versions of these on birch panels and exhibited them. They all sold really quickly. In fact\, I don’t have any left in the studio. Not one. This lead to another idea of making paintings of the paper collages I had made. They were the same size. Sometimes you couldn’t tell which were the paper collages and which were the paintings. I liked this idea. Eventually\, I made more paper collages (digitally) and turned them into more paintings. This lead to another idea of making large paintings of the paper collages. This exhibition; YOU IZ A MACHINE\, brings together those paintings for the first time. The title of the show came from a conversation I overheard about getting things done. All artists are machines.” – John McCarthy September 2021 \n\n\n\nWe’ve all been mesmerised in previous shows @benoakleygallery by John McCarthys phenomenal photorealist paintings. You’d think that would be enough talent for one artist\, well\, we’ve managed to coax out another first as McCarthy puts a whole new collection together for the Premier Showing of his collage paintings. Inspired by his love of vintage images\, magazines\, books and old comics these large format works on canvas have big impact skilfully filling the room with bold colour and the technical expertise were used to seeing.   \n\n\n\nPlease Scan QR Code for YOU IZ A MACHINE PDF .  We look forward to seeing on the night or throughout the show. Many thanks Ben \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Virtual Exhibition is now live!

SUMMARY:EVEN NATURE HAS ITS PRICE
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night Drinks Reception Friday 15th October from 7pm \n\n\n\nThis dynamic exhibition brings together two very experienced street artists\, both who have the natural world and it’s fragile existence in mind. Independently they create beautiful oversized mural exterior pieces across the World\, combining classical painting techniques with a poignant message. The Ben Oakley Gallery has drawn them in for a unique exhibition of studio pieces entitled \n\n\n\n ‘EVEN NATURE HAS ITS PRICE’. \n\n\n\nExpect a beautiful range of delicate paintings and line drawings from both artists on Canvas\, Paper and a variety of Framed Banknotes. \n\n\n\nBoth artists will be in attendance on the night and will be painting an exterior wall in Greenwich in the lead up to opening so keep em peeled. \n\n\n\nThere is a PDF available. info@benoakleygallery.com \n\n\n\nJACQUELINE DE MONTAIGNE is an Anglo-Portuguese painter\, mural and paste-up artist and is flying over for the show\, her dramatic\, nature infused figurative art can be found in international galleries and Europe’s prominent street art scene where her use of classical gilding techniques in an urban context\, has become her signature. \n\n\n\nJacquelines work is introspective and autobiographical\, where the artist uses secondary texts\, images and the visual identity of her figures to explore our true nature versus imposed beliefs and societal meanings. \n\n\n\nATM. \n\n\n\nIt was in the midst of lockdown\, all my street artwork painting on walls was cancelled. I was lying on my back\, listless as the days merged into each other without definition or routine. Jacqueline de Montaigne and I had taken part in a group show at the Ben Oakley Gallery but had never met. She proposed a two-person show after bumping into Stuart from the Inspiring City Blog who introduced my work to her whilst she was painting in Lisbon. The proposal gave me a purpose\, something to work towards\, producing small paintings on the themes of nature and its exploitation. \n\n\n\nPainting endangered birds on banknotes is a perfect metaphor for the relationship between money and environmental destruction. From the felling of ancient forests to the insidious overuse of pesticides\, herbicides and fertilizers\, making money all the way without concern for the environmental costs to land\, river and sea\, nature is under threat as never before. \n\n\n\nThe paintings on old master prints look at what we consider sacred\, and the possibilities for change in our conception of what is of most value in the world. \n\n\n\nWe are collaborating on an exterior wall in Greenwich in the week leading up to the exhibition which opens 7pm Friday 15th October 2021 @benoakleygallery \n\n\n\nPlease request a PDF if you’re interested.  We look forward to seeing on the night or throughout the show. Many thanks Ben

SUMMARY:DAVID BRAY – ‘Adventures in Time and Space'
DESCRIPTION:Opening Night Drinks Reception Friday 20th August from 7pm \n\n\n\n “Painted during the recent UK lockdown\, during various stages of government restrictions\, these landscapes are a mix of ‘en-plein-air’ studies and imagined views. It became apparent while I was painting them that they were capturing moments in time\, the sun being the most consistent motif throughout.  Taking myself off into the wilds of the countryside felt like an adventure – especially for a tired\, weak old git. Like a geriatric Vasco de Gama in a Toyota Corolla. If I wasn’t able to step outside\, it was time to explore inner space. Like a suburban Timothy Leary on prescription medicine.” I’ll be there\, hope to see you all there at Ben Oakley Gallery.   David Bray\n\n\n\nFor those unable to visit the Gallery in person there will also be a Virtual Exhibition available here from 20th August

SUMMARY:ROBERT SAMPLE – ‘DISCONNECTIONISM'
DESCRIPTION:Preview Drinks Reception 9th July @ 7pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibition runs until 24th July 2021. \n\n\n\nAs we ease one genius along\, a space becomes available for another. From graphic bold Prints by John Pedder to Abstract Oil Portraiture from our list of Gallery Favourites Robert Sample takes over Ben Oakley Gallery on Friday 7th July from 7pm the artist will be in attendance. We just love the depth of Samples world and invite you to check out this brand new show on paper and board. \n\n\n\nRobert Sample’s paintings explore a world that has strong visual references to earlier masters and styles\, yet is very rooted in the present\, combining dynamic elements from abstract painting and contrasting traditional techniques customary with historic painting.  \n\n\n\nThe protagonists in Robert’s paintings avert their gaze from the viewer\, they seem forlorn and overwhelmed by the existential world\, some look skyward in search of redemption and clarity. You could be forgiven for thinking this work deals with particular groups of individuals\, but no\, these are pictures of everyone of us stripped back to reveal our common vulnerabilities. Sample describes the images as depicting the “weightless mire” that we all endure as a key part of the human condition. They reflect back at us the times when we all feel rootless\, unanchored and dissociated. \n\n\n\nSample manipulates paint combining the impression of three dimentional form with large\, gestural brushwork that tips its hat toward abstract expressionism. Paint is added and removed\, layered and edited\, these abstract backdrops are proud not to represent anything but itself\, an exploration of mark making. \n\n\n\nWe are looking forward to seeing everyone back in the Ben Oakley Gallery.

SUMMARY:DAVID BRAY | MARK MELVIN - Opening Night Drinks Reception
DESCRIPTION:COUNTY LINES \n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING NIGHT DRINKS RECEPTION \n\n\n\nThe Ben Oakley Gallery has worked closely with both artists over its illustrious 10 years situated in Greenwich London SE10. \n\n\n\nDavid Bray has gone through a total art transformation from producing exquisite fine art Illustrations to his current delivery of abstract landscapes. Since moving to the Garden of England only a few years ago he has produced a fantastic body of accomplished landscape paintings\, as though he’s been painting all his life. The depth\, movement and mood that Bray manages to layer into his Turner esq vignettes are nothing short of breath taking.  \n\n\n\nMark Melvin has always loved the world of art\, including the old Masters and Renaissance painters but was propelled in the contemporary art world after watching a film of one of our most established Artists Ray Richardson on BBC2 many years ago. It was then Melvin had his epiphany and enough inspiration from that alone to begin a career in the art world. After teaching himself Melvin began to create paintings in oil of exactly what was disappearing right in front of him\, London\, Architecture especially Brutalism\, including the graffiti covered hoardings and barriers as London got gentrified. His love of Brutalist architecture has had Melvin running all over town for the last ten years to find remaining interesting buildings\, sketching initially then taking them into the studio to complete each painting.

SUMMARY:RAY RICHARDSON | MARK HAMPSON - Opening Night Drinks Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Two Man Show – Don’t miss it!” \n\n\n\nBROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING NIGHT DRINKS RECEPTION \n\n\n\nHaving exhibited together over 20 years ago in Tokyo\, old friends Ray Richardson & Mark Hampson have been bought back together in a two man show entitled ‘Brother from another Mother’ to be held at the Ben Oakley Gallery in Greenwich on Friday 11th October 2019. \n\n\n\nThough their lives have been at the opposite ends of the country they have kept more than in touch\, keeping a keen eye on each other’s careers as they both carved out very respectable grooves in the art world.  \n\n\n\nMark Hampson hails from the North: is a painter printmaker and the Head of Material Processes in the Royal Academy\, he combines fantastical subjects with both contemporary and traditional techniques to create intricate pieces of work.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHampson\, is represented in numerous private and public collections including the V&A Museum\, The Arts Council of Great Britain\, Hyundai Arts Collection\, the Metropolitan Museum in New York\, Krakow Museum and the Osaka Prefectural Government collection. \n\n\n\nRay Richardson hails from the South; he has immersed himself in Oil painting & Print making over the last two decades and has created a very recognisable style. He has been included in public exhibitions such as REALITY: Modern & Contemporary British Painting\, his work is in the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum. His paintings are effortlessly assembled together\, made up of a lifetime of gritty observation and experience from pavement to penthouse with his feet firmly on the ground.  \n\n\n\n\n\n“It’s as if you can hear the music playing soulfully in the background of these self made arenas. This in turn adds to the layers of atmosphere in the paintings helping set the scene\, leaving one imagining what preceded this frame and what is going to happen in the next” \n\n\n\nBen Oakley Gallery are extremely proud to show both artists in one show and are really looking forward to Brother from another Mother and hope you can make it on the opening night or throughout the exhibition.

SUMMARY:SWELER - Opening Night Drinks Reception
DESCRIPTION:EXCLUSIVE UK SOLO SHOW \n\n\n\nLEGIONS PLAYGROUND \n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING NIGHT DRINKS RECEPTION \n\n\n\nSWELER is an Australian artist based in Melbourne. In his youth he was influenced by and involved in the Street Graffiti scene. From that he exhibited in a number of group shows in Melbourne.  After moving to London in 2001 he spent ten years developing his style and working as a freelance artist.  \n\n\n\nSelling works in London and Europe mainly on commissions and by word of mouth. Having a small break from painting Sweler moved back to Melbourne where he is again developing his craft. Today he is working on small paintings\, juggling between three different approaches. Unrefined characters\, small birds on timber\, and birds on patterned landscapes. Currently his medium of choice is acrylic and spray paint on canvas.
